Maysa Arabi staying home to play for Windsor Lancers

The next step of her basketball journey didn't take Maysa Arabi very far.

The Grade 12 student-athlete from Holy Names has officially committed to join the University of Windsor women’s basketball team this fall, turning a childhood dream into reality.

“Windsor was definitely my first choice,” Arabi said. “I grew up here, so I kind of dreamed of playing here.”

Despite always having the Lancers at the top of her list, Arabi approached the recruiting process with an open mind. She explored other opportunities before ultimately confirming what she already knew.

“I still wanted to make sure that I was experiencing it,” she told Powerplay Sports. “Now I can compare Windsor’s program to others, and the difference is crazy.”

That difference, she explained, comes down to culture. “The commitment that Chantel and the girls have, and the unity and team culture, it’s truly unlike anything I’ve ever seen or been a part of,” Arabi said. “Being able to come into that, I’m really grateful.”

Arabi, along with Leah Shannon of Sandwich, has already had a unique introduction to the program. Being based in the Windsor area allowed both players to spend time around the team over the past few months, giving them an early look at the expectations and environment she’ll soon be part of full-time.

The familiarity extends beyond the program itself. Arabi has grown up playing alongside and against several players connected to the team, making the transition feel even more natural.

Now, she’ll officially suit up for her hometown university, bringing her high school career at Holy Names to a close and beginning a new chapter at the next level.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That moment brought to mind the upcoming Windsor Lancers football camp and the many fall sports that would go uncovered due to cuts in legacy media sports coverage.

Recognizing this gap, and with the support of my loving wife and family, I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

Founded locally and operated locally, we blend traditional sports reporting with modern digital storytelling.

From high school athletics and post secondary programs to junior hockey and grassroots clubs, we shine the spotlight on the people who make our sports community vibrant.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter. See you soon.

"We celebrate all of the athletes within Windsor-Essex and their achievements reflected on Powerplay Sports."
