Gagne wins triple gold
Nicklas Gagne of Maranatha was a triple gold winner at the WECSSAA Track and Field Championships. He won the Novice 400 in 54.24 seconds, the 800 in 2:02.11 and the 1,500 in 4:18.79 seconds. He hopes to break records when Sandwich hosts SWOSSA.

Chronopolous sweeps sprints
Andrea Chronopolous of Sandwich Secondary a broke the WECSSAA jr. girls 200m record that stood for 50 years, won the 100m and was part of the Sabres' 4x100 relay and came away with three gold medals at the WECSSAA Championships. She was unsure how she would race after coming off ACL surgery. "I was surprised by today's outcome. I'm very happy." Chronopolous told Powerplay Sports. "My goal next week (at SWOSSA at Sandwich) is to stay on top of things with my knee, icing it and doing my best and hopefully staying first."

Tent doubles up in Sr. Boys sprints
Thomas-Daniel Tent of Tecumseh Vista swept the sr. boys sprints at the WECSSAA Championships. He won the 100m Thursday morning in a time of 10,70 seconds before edging out Brayden Kane of St. Joe's in the 200m in 21.51 seconds later in the day. Both times were under the record but the races were wind aided. "I had some good competition." His goal is to get better for SWOSSA.

Asher Robitaille takes gold in Novice Discus gold
Asher Robitaille of Riverside Secondary School captured gold in the novice boys discus event at the WECSSAA Track and Field Championships with a winning throw of 37.11 metres.
Samuel Heide of Leamington District Secondary School earned silver with a throw of 33.01 metres, while Leighton Regnier of Belle River claimed bronze at 32.22 metres.
All three qualify for SWOSAA.

The 'Cats roar
The Villanova Wildcats track and field team are the WECSSAA champs after dethroning Sandwich and ending their 15-year run as top dog. "This is years in the making," Villy head coach Mike Baran told Powerplay Sports. "We've been chasing Sandwich for the past two years but wishing we could be in this position for a long time." The jr and sr boys along with the novice girls dominated the track racking up the points needed to dethrone the Sabres. A special moment was had when Sandwich head coach Rob Moore handed the Wildcats coaches Mike Baran and Nicole Sassine the winning plaque. "His dynasty is something to aspire to." Baran said. "What Rob did was very special since he's a mentor to me. He's a big part of why this program is as good as it is. He supported us in many ways."

Clayton brings down 45-year old record
Mallory Clayton of St. Anne broke the novice women’s discus record with a throw of 35.90M. The 14-year old toppled the mark set by Joanne Rothery in 1981 who had a throw of 35.64M. Rothery went on to break records at the University of Oklahoma and be inducted into the Windsor-Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.

Ron Strong inducted
Ron Strong was recently inducted into the Canadian Powerlifting Hall of Fame. As per CTV Windsor, Ron Strong, a retired truck driver who became one of Canada’s most celebrated powerlifters, has been inducted into the Canada Powerlifting Hall of Fame.
It’s a fitting honour for an athlete whose career has defied both convention and time.
Strong got a late start in the game and took up competitive powerlifting when he was 40 with a goal to get in shape to play hockey.
He balanced his full-time job as a truck driver and powerlifting. Strong quickly found himself chasing goals and travelling around the world.
“Coming from a hockey world where you wanted to beat up your competition every day, I enjoyed the camaraderie of powerlifting, and I didn’t have to worry about who I had to beat,” he said.
“It was all about beating myself and getting better.”
He went on to become a 15-time Canadian champion and is also a world champion.
At the age of 60, he pulled a 632-pound deadlift and broke a world record at the 2019 World Championships in Sweden squatting 518 pounds at the age of 61.

Ethan Belchetz heading to the NCAA
Windsor Spitfires' general manager Bill Bowler confirmed forward Ethan Belchetz will not be returning to the team next season. Belchetz announced the news he is heading to Michigan State University on his instagram account Tuesday. Bowler acknowledged the news is not something the franchise expected from their former #1 pick. "We'll figure it out." He said. "Ethan and his family that's what they've chosen and we wish them nothing but the best."

Will Lewis locks it down: Conference Pitcher of the Year
Will Lewis is the 2026 Illinois Skyway Conference Pitcher of the Year. "Any time you get recognized it feels good but in my mind it’s all just extra stuff. My job is to help the team win, the award is just recognition that I did my part." Lewis told Powerplay Sports. "When your team hits 97 home runs and leads the region in almost every offensive statistical category it allows me as a pitcher to breathe easy." The 21-year old Villanova grad attends Morton College where he went 8-2 with 71k's with an ERA of 3.74 this past season. He's been focusing on getting up early in counts and putting pressure on hitters to make bad swings. Lewis is playing for the Tecumseh Thunder 22U team this summer starting May 27th at Lacasse Park in the new Detroit collegiate summer league. "I'm super excited about the opportunity to compete at a high level in front of my friends and family in the area.
