Alumni golf tournament helps fund Windsor men's basketball program

The Windsor Lancers men's basketball program held its sixth annual golf tournament this weekend, presented by AW4U, bringing alumni and friends of the program out for a day on the course and a chance to meet this year's team before the season tips off.

Every player was stationed at a hole throughout the day, introducing themselves to golfers and running a small contest at each stop.

"This brings out alumni and friends to our program. A good way to kick off the season, meeting new people, welcoming back alumni, and gives an opportunity for our alumni and friends to meet the team this year," head coach Chris Cheng told PowerplayWindsor.com.

The event wrapped with a banquet following the round.

Beyond the day itself, Cheng says the tournament plays a real role in funding the season ahead, everything from exhibition play to travel to game-day accommodations.

"All the money raised helps towards our competitive season. Anything from exhibition play, to extra meals on the road, to accommodations to help our athletes," Cheng said. As an example, he pointed to booking an extra hotel room on road trips dedicated purely to recovery, stocked with necessary tools for players before and after games.

"All the money raised goes towards our season and play, just to help our guys get a good athlete experience and give us a good competitive advantage."

The Lancers hosted Eastern Michigan University and the Oakland Golden Grizzies at the Toldo Lancer Centre in August. Tryouts officially began September 9th. Windsor will play in two pre-season tournaments in early October before heading to Guelph for their season opener on October 23rd. Their home opener is October 30th against York.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That brought me to the upcoming season that was going to be overlooked due to cuts to legacy media.

I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project and to continue showcasing local athletes and our vibrant sports community.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter.
