Costello remembers '63 Allan Cup title

1963 was a good year for Jack Costello. He won the Allan Cup and graduated from the University of Windsor. The former St. Clair College administrator was 23 years old when he helped the Windsor Bulldogs win the sr. men's national championship. "It would be like the Memorial Cup in junior hockey and the Stanley Cup in professional hockey but for senior hockey it was the Allan Cup". said Costello.

In 1963 there were only six NHL teams meaning a lot of the good players were playing senior men's hockey. Costello says, "we had three or four guys that were ex-NHL'ers playing on our team for the Bulldogs".

The Bulldogs hosted the championship tournament and beat the Winnipeg Maroons four games to one. Costello, who was born in South Porcupine, Ontario, played on the "Northern Ontario Line" with Lou Bendo and Real Chevrefils who both hailed from Timmins. Chevrefils played eight seasons in the NHL mostly for the Boston Bruins before riding out his hockey career with the Bulldogs.

After hanging up his skate Costello went on to have a successful career as an administrator at St. Clair College. He founded the men's hockey team and guided the Saints to five provincial titles before helping organize the national body for Canadian colleges.

Now 81, Costello is in the Windsor Essex County Sports Hall of Fame, along with many others, and reflects on a great moment in his life in this video brought to you the St. Clair College Alumni Association.
