'End my high school golf career with a bang': Frankie Fields wins OFSAA silver
Updated: Oct 17
Frankie Fields didn’t pick up a golf club until Grade 9. Four years later, she’s leaving high school golf with an OFSAA medal around her neck.
The Lajeunesse senior won silver in the high school division at the OFSAA girls golf championship. She was the only golfer from the area to finish in the top three.

It took a playoff to decide it.
Fields opened with an 83 on the first day, on fast greens with tough pin placements. “I played pretty decent but my putting was rough,” she said. “I was ok with the 83 but I knew I could do better.”
She did. Day two started with a birdie on her first hole, then a triple bogey, but she kept her cool. “I had 5 birdies which saved me,” Fields said.
She had a little extra support out there too. Her coach could only make the first day, so he left inspiring notes on her scorecard. Then her family surprised her by showing up for her back nine.

“Honestly I think I was playing better when they were watching me,” she said.
On her final hole, Fields hit a drive that just rolled into the rough, then stuck her approach to six feet and made the birdie putt. That gave her a 75, a personal best.
“75 is also my personal best so I was pretty hyped,” she said.
She didn’t think she was in the medal hunt until her coach called and told her to stay at the course. Her two-day total of 158 had her tied with E.L. Crossley’s Grace Stewart, and the convenor came out to tell them there would be a playoff.
Stewart won it, and Fields took silver. “Sadly, I came up short in the playoff but still happy to get silver at OFSAA and end my high school golf career with a bang,” she said.
It’s a fitting finish for a golfer who started out with a ladies beginner set her dad bought after she heard the tryout announcement at school. This fall, she also won her first SWOSSA title.
“It’s bittersweet that my high school golf career is over but I met so many amazing people, gained a lot of new friendships and memories that will last forever,” Fields said.

At the OFSAA boys tournament at Ambassador Golf Club in LaSalle, Sandwich Secondary finished third in the team standings with a two-day total of 434.
Henrik Mingay was the top local golfer. He tied for third with Waterloo-Oxford’s Carter Maue, both finishing at 139 over two days.
Sandwich’s Kevin Thompson shot 71 both days to finish at 142, tied for seventh.
