Essex drops home opener vs Mooretown

GAME REPORT: Essex 73’s Push Hard, But Mooretown Holds On for 4–2 Win

The Essex 73’s threw everything they had at the Mooretown Flags on Tuesday night in their home opener — especially during a dominant second period where they poured on the pressure — but the steady play of Flags goaltender John Chartrand made the difference in a 4–2 Mooretown victory.

Essex opened the scoring late in the first period. With just 55 seconds remaining, Noah Mathieson received a great pass from Connor Hunt who took a pounding as he scored into an open cage. The goal capped off a strong opening frame for Essex, who outshot Mooretown 10–3 in the period.

Mooretown answered back early in the second, shifting the game’s momentum. Masen Flett tied it just two minutes in, followed by goals from Josh Hazzard at 4:06 and Landon Marcy at 8:03 to give the Flags a 3–1 lead.

Essex, however, didn’t go quietly. The 73’s responded with intensity, firing 20 shots on net in the middle frame alone. Their persistence paid off when Andrew Baker made a beautiful move in the slot, deking a defender and roofing a shot from in close to cut the deficit to one.

Essex pushed but could not find the equalizer in the third. The 73's outshot the Flags 11–6 but Chartrand held down the fort. Jace Dupuis added an open netter as Mooretown improves to 2-1 on the season while Essex falls to 1-1.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That moment brought to mind the upcoming Windsor Lancers football camp and the many fall sports that would go uncovered due to cuts in legacy media sports coverage.

Recognizing this gap, and with the support of my loving wife and family, I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

Founded locally and operated locally, we blend traditional sports reporting with modern digital storytelling.

From high school athletics and post secondary programs to junior hockey and grassroots clubs, we shine the spotlight on the people who make our sports community vibrant.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter. See you soon.

"We celebrate all of the athletes within Windsor-Essex and their achievements reflected on Powerplay Sports."
