Fryer helps U of T earn national silver

She didn't get to cap off her university career with the ultimate prize but Amherstburg's Erica Fryer did help the University of Toronto earn silver at the USport National Championship this past weekend. "I'm really proud of our group of girls," Fryer told Powerplay Sports. "I don't think anyone had us being in the national championships so it was nice to beat those odds."

The #6 seeded Varsity Blues beat #3 UNB in the quarter-finals and punched their ticket to the gold medal game against #7 Montreal in a 2-1 shootout win. They fell to the top-seeded Concordia Stingers 3-1 in the final Sunday. "It was definitely a battle. Our team didn't give up," said the 23-year old. "This is my last year so to be able to make it and have a shot, it was pretty awesome."

The silver medal is U of T's best finish since 2003 when the Varsity Blues lost 5-4 in overtime to Alberta.

The silver medal caps off a five-year career that saw the Villanova grad post a sparkling 1.41 GAA and 24 shutouts including seven this season.

Fryer is hoping to play professionally and is exploring opportunities in Europe with an eye towards playing in the PWHL one day. "I'd like to. It's a goal of mine."
