Heartbreak ending for Lancers football

They had 'em. The Windsor Lancers kept the high octane Laurier offence in check Saturday afternoon and took a 14-7 lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Maceo Christmas picked up a forced fumble giving Windsor the ball on the Laurier 24 yard line. Four plays later it was freshman quarterback Nick Dimovski on the keeper from nine yards out giving Windsor their first lead of the game.

However Laurier moved the ball with relative ease to tie the game on the next series. QB Taylor Elgersma, the USports offensive player of the week, went to work putting together a nine-play 87-yard drive that ended with a four-yard pass to Quentin Scott for the game-tying touchdown.

Elgersma wasn't done. With 2:44 left he hit Raiden Thorne with a 22-yard pass up the gut to give the home team a 21-14 lead. Windsor would threaten from 21 yards out with 28 seconds left. Weabge Mombo took a pass from Dimovski in the flats, cut to the outside to the endzone for what appeared to be the tying score. However, Windsor was flagged for holding. The Lancers had two more kicks at the can but could not convert as Laurier advances to the Yates Cup for the first time since 2017. They'll face Western who beat Queen's 47-20.
