Lancers football recap

The Windsor Lancers went toe to toe with the top team in the OUA before dropping a 58-25 decision to the Western Mustangs at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon. Windsor quarterback Sam Girard ran for a touchdown and threw an 82-yard strike to Matthew James to give the Lancers a 17-13 lead midway through the second quarter.

However, a Brett Ellerman touchdown with 11 seconds left in the first half started a Western scoring binge that would extend into the 4th quarter. Trey Humes punched in a TD from 12-yards out three minutes into the third quarter to give the Mustangs a 30-17 lead. In an attempt to stop the bleeding Lancers head coach J-P Circelli chose to try and keep a drive alive on 3rd-and-five from his 41 yard line "We owe it to our guys to be aggressive as possible. We want them to win the moment".

The strategy backfired as The Mustangs defended the pass, regained the ball on downs and promptly took it back the other way for a 42-yard touchdown pass to Ellerman on the next play. Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall says it was the game's turning point but also gave his former offensive line coach props for taking the chance "I like their aggressiveness".

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That moment brought to mind the upcoming Windsor Lancers football camp and the many fall sports that would go uncovered due to cuts in legacy media sports coverage.

Recognizing this gap, and with the support of my loving wife and family, I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

Founded locally and operated locally, we blend traditional sports reporting with modern digital storytelling.

From high school athletics and post secondary programs to junior hockey and grassroots clubs, we shine the spotlight on the people who make our sports community vibrant.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter. See you soon.

"We celebrate all of the athletes within Windsor-Essex and their achievements reflected on Powerplay Sports."

John Fairley, St. Clair College

"Another great resource for local sports produced by a person that has been invested in local sports for decades."
