Local Sports Update: Danby comes back strong

Border City Boxing's Jeff Danby walked away a winner at the Brampton Cup. He took care of Phil Vanderzand of Guelph MMA in the Master Novice 80kg final, winning 3-0. "He was a southpaw. I haven't fought southpaws before so I was a little apprehensive getting into the ring," said the 50-year who earned a knockdown 22 seconds into the bout. "He was a tough guy. He came back and went the distance."
This was Danby's fourth fight and his first in three years. He went through health issues but has rebounded strong. "It really knocked me down, my health. That's why I needed to get back in the ring. I had to prove I wasn't done. I had to overcome some obstacles. Hard work and it paid off." said Danby who plans to enter tournaments later this year.

The Windsor Spitfires lost 4-3 in a shootout Sunday in Sarnia Sunday. Ryan Abraham and Cole Davis each had a goal and an assist. Liam Greentree chipped in a couple of assists. Windsor is now chasing Sarnia for the final playoff spot. The Sting jumped into 8th win Sunday's win and have a 10-point advantage over the Spits. Windsor hosts Erie Thursday.
The LaSalle Vipers dropped a 5-2 decision at Elmira Saturday and are on a three-game losing skid. At the top of the Western Conference for much of the season LaSalle has dropped to 4th behind London, Strathroy and St. Mary's. The Lincolns visit LaSalle Wednesday.
The Leamington Flyers beat Caledon 5-4 Saturday. Alex Cunningham had a goal and two assists to lead the Flyers who are third in the West Conference and trail Milton by four points for second. They host Brantford Thursday.
