OHL player of the week among the best

The top goal scorer in the Canadian Hockey League is Connor Bedard. No surprise there after he led the World Junior tournament last month with nine goals in seven games and set national records for most assists (14) and points (23).

The consensus #1 pick in this year's NHL draft currently leads the CHL with 45 goals in 38 games. Right behind the 17-year old phenom are Matthew Maggio of the Windsor Spitfires who has 40 goals in 46 games and Alexandre Doucet of the Halifax Mooseheads (40 goals in 50 games).

The Spitfires captain tallied a goal and four assists in Sunday's 8-1 win over Owen Sound to move into 5th overall in CHL scoring with 79 points. Maggio is six points behind last year's total of 85 with 20 games remaining. The Windsor native finished second on the team a year ago behind Wyatt Johnston who had a CHL best 124 points.

In three games last week the New York Islanders prospect scored five goals and added six assists and is recognized as the OHL Player of the Week for his efforts.

Windsor heads to Flint Wednesday to take on the Firebirds. They return home Thursday to square off against the Soo Greyhounds.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That brought me to the upcoming season that was going to be overlooked due to cuts to legacy media.

I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project and to continue showcasing local athletes and our vibrant sports community.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter.
