Matt Martin Retires After 16 NHL Seasons, Joins Islanders Front Office

Longtime New York Islanders forward and Windsor native Matt Martin has officially retired from the NHL after 16 seasons, capping off a career defined by toughness, leadership, and loyalty. A fan favorite and key part of the Islanders' “Identity Line,” Martin played in 987 NHL games and ranks second all-time with 3,936 hits behind teammate Cal Clutterbuck (4,029). He led the NHL in hits between 2011 and 2016.

He was drafted by the Islanders in the 5th round in 2008 graduating from the Sarnia Sting program.

Though he’s hanging up his skates, the 36-year old isn’t leaving the organization. He will remain with the Islanders as special assistant to general manager Mathieu Darche, taking on a new role in hockey operations and player development.
