Meet Your New Spitfire: Windsor Selects Lauchlan Whelan 16th Overall

The Windsor Spitfires had a need at centre. Friday night in Kingston, they filled it.
With the 16th overall pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, the Spits selected Lauchlan Whelan, a 5'11" centre who played for the Quinte Red Devils this past season putting up 32 goals and 22 assists.
"Lauchlan is a player our scouting staff identified early in the season as someone who embodies the type of player we want in the Windsor Spitfires organization," Bowler said through a team release. "He is a highly competitive centre with excellent hockey IQ, strong habits away from the puck, and the ability to impact the game in a variety of ways. We are thrilled to welcome him and his family to Windsor."

Elite Prospects had Whelan ranked among the top available prospects heading into the draft, pointing to his off-puck awareness, play-driving ability, and playmaking instincts as standout traits.
With Liam Greentree, A.J. Spellacy, Carson Woodall and Joey Costanzo all moving on, Bowler is reshaping the roster. Whelan is exactly the kind of foundational piece Bowler is building around along last year's first round pick John McLaughlin.
Whelan will be in Windsor next weekend for orientation camp Saturday and Sunday.
