Melyk George ready to go in return to the field

After a year away from the field, Melyk George returns to a Windsor Lancers team that is ranked 9th in USports heading into the opening weekend of the season.

The Windsor Lancers are set to open their 2026 season Saturday night on the road against McMaster, and they'll do it with one of the top defensive fronts in the OUA getting even deeper.

Fifth-year lineman Melyk George is back after missing the 2025 season with a meniscus injury, and he is ready to pick up right where he left off. The Scarborough native and Northern Secondary School product broke out in 2024, appearing in seven games and earning OUA second-team all-star honours after racking up 16.5 tackles.

George says the layoff gave him a new perspective. "It humbled me in a sense," George told PowerplayWindsor.com. "I put on some weight, so now I'm more of a nose tackle. I used to play more of a three-technique, but now I'm a nose. I feel strong, I feel healthy."

He rejoins a defensive line that dominated OUA football a season ago. All-Canadians Ahmad Taylor and Braxton Johnson anchored the unit in 2025, with Taylor leading the country with 11 tackles for loss and Johnson right behind him at 10.5. Johnson edged Taylor in sacks, 8.5 to 8.0.

George says lining up alongside Johnson is something he's been looking forward to. "Being able to play with Braxton, it's big for me," George said. "I never got to play with Braxton. It's huge. I'm a part of that D-line and I'm excited to be back."

"We put in the work all summer. "We're going to continue to grind, continue to show our talents, and we'll see out there on Saturdays."

Head coach J-P Circelli, speaking on The OUA Show hosted by @cfperspective, said the linebacking corps deserves more attention after a strong but under-the-radar 2025.

"We thought our linebacking corps was outstanding last year," Circelli said. "Didn't get the recognition in the OUA, but I think a lot of people understand who Marco Piccione, our middle linebacker, and Dylan Simpson are. They made a lot of plays last year."

The Lancers feel they are better than a year ago when they finished 5-3, beat Ottawa in the quarterfinals before losing to Queen's in the semis.

Kickoff against McMaster is set for Saturday night.
