North Star sweeps discus event

Updated: May 4, 2025

Tyler Lamarche, Leora Sharman and Ava Mayrand went 1-2-3 in the junior girls discus event at the 18th annual Lancer Prep Invitational. All three set a personal best in the event with Lamarche throwing 35.09m, Sharman 32.18 and Mayrand 26.32.

"It's fun," Lamarche told Powerplay Sports. "I feel we really represent our school very well. It's nice to PB in our first meet."

Lamarche went on to win the junior girls shot put during the afternoon session with a throw of 12.21m which set a meet record. Mayrand finished second at 11.24 while Sharman placed 5th at 9.92m.

The meet drew 47 high schools to the University of Windsor including one from Timmins. "Now they're getting to see other athletes," said Windsor Lancers head track and field coach Colin Inglis. "Now they're getting a little variety, seeing some other competition. Makes the competition a little better for them."

The meet is also an opportunity for student-athletes to check out the city and facility. Some of them have already committed to the University of Windsor while others like the North Star trio may have caught the eye of UWindsor coaches.

"Always hoping for surprises especially from one year to the next someone all of a sudden there's somebody that wasn't on the radar before and now is." said Inglis who notes some have gone through growth spurts while others may have given up another sport to focus solely on track and field.

Alyssa Tannini of Villanova set the meet record in the Novice girls 80m hurdles. The grade 9 runner clocked in at 12.31 seconds, over a full second ahead of second place Avery Fines of Sarnia St. Pat's (13.63). Tannini also won the 100m and was part of the 4x100 relay team that won the event.

Here's a quick photo gallery from my travel across the stadium Saturday.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That moment brought to mind the upcoming Windsor Lancers football camp and the many fall sports that would go uncovered due to cuts in legacy media sports coverage.

Recognizing this gap, and with the support of my loving wife and family, I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

Founded locally and operated locally, we blend traditional sports reporting with modern digital storytelling.

From high school athletics and post secondary programs to junior hockey and grassroots clubs, we shine the spotlight on the people who make our sports community vibrant.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter. See you soon.

"We celebrate all of the athletes within Windsor-Essex and their achievements reflected on Powerplay Sports."

John Fairley, St. Clair College
