Ravens prove, "We are the best team"

The Essex Ravens had won 28 straight games heading into the OPFL final Sunday in London but felt onlookers were second guessing how good they really were. "There was a lot of talk all season about London this London that."

The Jr. Mustangs hosted the championship game and had an identical 7-0 record going in.

Ravens' head coach Glen Mills says a blocked punt early in the game, that led to a touchdown, set the tone. "We got rolling and there was no looking back." The Ravens went on to beat their rivals 35-7.

"It was pretty important for our guys and they wanted to send a clear message. We are the best team no if and's or but's about it. They did that and they did that in convincing style."

Mills says the defence was upset they allowed the Jr. Mustangs to score. "That's why we are where we are just because it's personal to those guys when people score."

The Ravens have now won three straight OPFL titles dating back to 2019. Mills wonders what could be had the league been able to play in 2020. "2020 I think would have been our best Ravens team of all time and unfortunately due to Covid we didn't get to play."

Mills doesn't know how long this current streak will go but the Ravens graduate only seven players.

aboutus

Powerplay Windsor was born during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2018. Walking through a charming pedestrian underpass sparked a memory—being in the tunnel at the University of Michigan early in my career. That moment brought to mind the upcoming Windsor Lancers football camp and the many fall sports that would go uncovered due to cuts in legacy media sports coverage.

Recognizing this gap, and with the support of my loving wife and family, I launched Powerplay Sports as a passion project.

Founded locally and operated locally, we blend traditional sports reporting with modern digital storytelling.

From high school athletics and post secondary programs to junior hockey and grassroots clubs, we shine the spotlight on the people who make our sports community vibrant.

Our video channel brings you highlights, interviews and behind the scenes access. We are courtside, rinkside and on the field capturing moments that matter. See you soon.

"We celebrate all of the athletes within Windsor-Essex and their achievements reflected on Powerplay Sports."
