Saints preached defence before setting offensive record

When the St. Clair men's basketball team hosted Conestoga Saturday at the St. Clair Sportsplex the game was supposed to be all about revenge. "We don't forget the losses at all." said veteran guard Jalen Harmon.

The Candors handed the Saints a 110-101 overtime loss on December 4th. Since it was the final game of the semester St. Clair had over a month to stew on the loss.

"Having all that time off to reflect on it and say 'we gotta do things better'", said co-head coach Brendon Seguin. "It gave us something to look forward to. To prepare for."

In the week leading up to the rematch practice centered around defence. "Five days. There were some ups and downs." said Seguin. "Guys were getting a little frustrated and getting a little stale because we were so repetitive in it."

The team stayed focus and on game day it was the defense that allowed the offence to erupt. St. Clair set a school record en route to a 123-82 win. It was the third time in program history the Saints hit the 120-point mark and first time since the 2018-2019 season.

"We were just saying get to 90 and play defence. It's a testament to the depth and talent that we have. We have ten guys that can go for double digits at any time."

Shakael Pryce dropped 28 points on the Candors Saturday. The next day it was Jesiah Deerr who stepped up to lead the team in scoring with 19 points as the Saints beat Sheridan 101-81 to improve to 9-3 on the season.

"It's probably one of the best basketball weekends this program has seen. It's a blessing to be a part of it." said Harmon.

St. Clair has sole possession of second place in the OCAA West Division and is now riding a three-game win streak.

The Saints hit the road Sunday at Canadore and return home against Redeemer February 10th.
