Spits continue their climb

The Windsor Spitfires have gone five games without a loss after beating Flint 5-3 Wednesday night.

Jacob Maillet had a pair of goals, Liam Greentree dished off three assists and Joey Costanzo made 34 saves to lead the Spits. Conor Walton notched his first OHL goal late in the third which turned out to be the game winner.

In the 14 games since Torres took over the Spits have gone 8-4-2 and have slowly climbed out of the hole they dug themselves into earlier this season. "When you start finding ways to consistently get points it's the quickest way to get up the standings." Torres said. "We've talked about needing to string together wins and points and disappointed to lose a couple of those games in overtime but the fact that we've still collected points is exactly what we wanted to do coming into the new year here."

The Spits now have 27 points and trail Flint for the final playoff spot by four points with a game in hand. They are only two points behind Sarnia for the 9 hole with a game in hand.

"I think if we keep focusing on the process we're gonna find ourselves in a spot where we're fighting for a playoff spot." Torres said.

Windsor is on the road at Erie Saturday night and Niagara Sunday afternoon before returning home to host Saginaw January 10th, trade deadline day. What will the team look like in a week? Stay tuned.
