'You can't ignore what he's doing': Colby Ginn taking game to a new level

Colby Ginn is horizontal, arched backward, with a defender reaching for something he can’t have. Some say he’s too small to play ball. The photo says it all. The LaSalle native is not listening.

The fifth-year Windsor Lancers receiver leads the country with nine touchdown catches in six games.

That’s more than he scored in his first four seasons combined. Ginn had seven touchdowns from 2022 to 2025, including three last season.

The rest of his numbers have jumped too. Ginn has 32 catches for 621 yards this season, which is already more yardage than any full season of his career. He’s averaging 103.5 yards a game, more than double last year’s 46.2.

“Definitely happy with how things have been going, obviously like anything there is always going to be plays I want back or outcomes I wish were different but seeing the team consistently raising the standard and pushing each other is great to see with playoffs approaching.”

Lancers head coach Jean-Paul Circelli has a message for the pro scouts.

“Hopefully the CFL teams are watching because this whole thing about him being too small. I don’t know. It looks pretty dynamic to me,” Circelli said. “He’s pretty special out there.”

Ginn went undrafted in the CFL draft this spring despite a strong showing at the combine.

“I’m sure he’s got a chip on his shoulder because, you know, he didn’t get drafted. He did everything right in the combines. Everyone sang his praises,” Circelli said. “But there’s always like, yeah, but he’s kind of small, and I get it. You don’t want to make exceptions because size is one thing you can’t coach, but you can’t ignore what he’s doing on the field right now.”

Circelli says Ginn put in the work in the off-season, and it shows in how many tough balls he hauls in.

“He’s done a really good job putting the work in throughout the offseason. Get his body right, but he’s got this amazing catch radius,” Circelli said. “Kind of like Amon-Ra St. Brown, you put it close he’s going to make that happen.”

“We know once he catches that he can do special things when the ball’s in his hands.”

Being mentioned in the same breath as Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is the ultimate compliment. “I take pride in being a complete receiver. Blocking hard, doing the little things to help put the team in the best position to win each week.”

Ginn’s chemistry with quarterback Kareame Cotton has turned the Lancers’ passing game into one of the best in the country. Ginn’s best day came against Queen’s, the defending Yates Cup champions, when he caught eight passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 25-22 win that handed the Gaels their first loss.

“I think he’s putting a real good resume together,” Circelli said. “And, the best part is he’s kind of dragging us along for the ride.”

With some banged up players, the Lancers enter the bye week at a good time. At 5-2, Windsor heads to Guelph for their regular season finale October 24th.
