Banwell is clutch with game on the line

Chloe Banwell walked up to the plate in the bottom of the 7th with bases loaded and two outs. She fouled off the first pitch. Took a ball on the second. Swung an missed on the third and then delivered the game winning double to give St. Joe's an 11-10 win over St. Anne.

"That was pretty cool," said the grade 9 student who was scheduled to play a house league game for Forest Glade a couple of hours later. "I've never actually gotten a good play like that where it's like game changing so it was fun."

Banwell knocked in two runs on the game ending play to help the Lasers to improve to 6-2 on the season. "We were down 10-6, luckily the top of our lineup was up to bat and they came through when we needed them." said Saints' head coach Rich Mayville. "We gotta come to play because in the next couple of weeks it's win or go home and we wanna win."

St. Anne had their three-game win streak halted. They played hard," said Saints' head coach Marianne DiPasquale. "We just lost in the last two minutes of the game so yeah, they played ok."

The Saints, who have four players who didn't play softball until this spring, drop to 4-3 on the season. "They're spirit. They're just a good group of girls."

St. Joe's lost to L'Essor in a game earlier this afternoon and are in second place in the city division as they gear up for playoffs beginning next week. Top-seeded Lajeunesse was undefeated heading into play Monday at 6-0.

Sandwich, Kingsville and Villanova each had one loss and are battling for the top spot in the County Division.
