Brunet-May one-two punch for Lancers

Mandy Brunet did what many expected her to do, win the women's triple jump at the OUA championships Saturday at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse. She took gold after leading the pack with a jump of 12.54 metres. "Always things to improve on," said Brunet who was happy with her performance. "We have one goal in mind and that's in two weeks (at USports national championships in Windsor) so anything today just moves us forward to that."
Mikayla May was ranked second heading into the competition with a leap of 12.01m and opened at 12.20 to take the early lead. Her second jump landed at 12.23m The second year jumper was the leader until Brunet landed her big score of the day on her fourth attempt.
"This is my first time jumping at OUA's so I didn't know what to expect," said May who broke the school record in the long jump Friday night leaping 6.13 metres. "I was really surprised with that (her opening attempt in the triple jump) because this is my first time hitting AQ (automatic qualifier) so I was super excited."
May's best jump in her rookie year was 11.60m and gives credit to Brunet for helping her grow. "She's a really good role model and someone to look up to and I love training with her." May told Powerplay Sports.
"It just motivates me so much," Brunet said. "We train together every single day. We all do the same hard work so to see everyone improving is just the best feeling.
Their 1-2 finish helped the women's team finish 3rd overall with 117 points behind Guelph (141.5) and Western (194). The national championship is back at the University of Windsor beginning March 6th.
