The gym at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School had a little extra energy last week and it was all for a good cause. The school’s senior boys basketball team faced off against a newly formed team of Carter alumni in a charity game, with the current squad coming away with a 62–56 win.
More importantly, the event raised $2,000 for SickKids Canada, supporting care and research at Toronto’s The Hospital for Sick Children.
Students and staff packed the gym to watch game game surrounded by, what organizers call, a great atmosphere while supporting an important cause.
The charity game actually started a few years ago when staff were looking for a meaningful cause the school community could rally behind. Several staff members had family members affected by cardiac conditions, which inspired them to focus on heart-related charities.
Basketball is big in the community and quickly became the natural way to bring everyone together. Since then, the event has become an annual tradition raising $1,800 last year for the Erie Shores HealthCare Heart to Heart campaign.
Throwing an alumni team together for this year's game was a first which turned out to be an exciting addition. The plan is to continue hosting the game while supporting causes that impact the local community.
