CCH football returns to gridiron

For the first time in half a decade, Catholic Central has a senior football team—and while the scoreboard didn’t go their way in Friday’s season opener, the school still had plenty to celebrate.

Facing a tough opponent in their debut, the Comets fell 41-0 to the North Star Wolves, a finalist in last year's Tier 2 championship. The score didn’t tell the whole story. For the school and its young players, simply getting back on the field was a major win.

“When I put the announcements out for football, they all think it’s the soccer ball,” said head coach Jalil Khoury. “Getting them to engage in Canadian football is a bit of a challenge—with them learning the game, learning the rules, it’s a whole new terminology for them.”

Still, the enthusiasm is undeniable. The players are buying in, and despite the rough start, there's real excitement around the team’s return.

“Even though we saw a loss in our first game, I think we saw a lot of good stuff and we have a lot of potential,” said senior Yousif Abdalla in an interview with Powerplay Sports. “We’re making a lot of progress quickly. It’s super fun.”

"I'm 100-percent happy to see Catholic Central back." said Wolves' head coach Joel Charron. "They're new. They're building. The more schools playing football in our league the better.

Catholic Central will host St. Joe's Friday at 5pm on their new field. North Star is at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg at the same time to take on the Brennan Cardinals.
