Fratmen win thriller vs 401 rivals

The St. Clair Fratmen were a bundle of energy heading into their home opener Saturday night at Acumen Stadium. It was their first game in their new home at the College in front of eleven hundred excited fans against the defending league champions the London Beefeaters.

The Fratmen built a 14-0 first half lead. Wide receiver Cody Holmes caught a Michael Beale pass and juked his way into the endzone for the opening score. Beale then hit Branden McCraney with a 27-yard pass for another score in the second quarter.

London would get on the board before halftime as quarterback Clarke McCallum hit a streaking Michael Saucier with a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7.

Holmes would get his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a diving catch in the endzone to give the home team a 21-7 lead. Jake Halloway added a rouge making it 22-7.

London turned the tide in the 4th. Codey McRoberts picked off a ball at midfield and brought the pick-6 home to made it 22-14. The Beefeaters then blocked a punt and found themselves at the St. Clair 22 yard line. McCallum hit Devon Smith, who was double teamed, for a touchdown and converted a two point play with Mitchel Spence to tie the game.

With 35 seconds left the game and the Fratmen on their 31 yard line it seemed as though overtime was inevitable. Then Beale hit McCraney on the far sideline. The Herman grad made a move to avoid the first defender and slid through three would-be tacklers and was off to the races. He jumped into the endzone with an elbow drop wrestling move as his teammates gathered to celebrate.

McCraney finished with 163 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns while Holmes had six catches for 89 yards and two majors. Beale was 14 for 25 and threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns.
