Lancers building depth

The Windsor Lancers football program is running down their dream of competing for a Yates Cup championship. Spring camp concluded Sunday afternoon with head coach J-P Circelli pleased with the way things unfolded. "It (camp) gave us a chance to really see where our talent level is and kinda take a look at the depth chart and say who do we see filling in where. Are we in good shape or a little thin." Circelli told Powerplay Sports.

After a 6-2 regular season, the Lancers won their first playoff game since 1975 beating the Carleton Ravens 14-11 in late October. The No. 9 ranked Lancers then suffered a heartbreaking 21-14 loss to Laurier in the OUA semi-finals.

Circelli feels the program is further ahead than they've ever been since taking over the program in 2019. "I think talent wise it's the most talented group we've had," Circelli asserted. "The expectations are very high and the fact that three of our guys are at the (CFL) combine right now kinda speaks volumes of where we're going with this."

Circelli says about 90 players participated in spring camp with starters like Muftah Ageli and Brett MacDougall watching on the sidelines during Sunday's Blue-Gold game.

"We're pleased with the talent level," Circelli said. "We just gotta keep developing so we can start taking on the best teams in the country."
