Lancers Tune Up with Competitive Exhibition Weekend at home

After nearly a month away from competition, the Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team returned to the hardwood this past weekend, hosting three high-level exhibition matches at the Toldo Lancer Centre to shake off the holiday rust and prepare for the stretch run of the season.

Windsor opened the weekend Friday night with a 3–1 win over the Brock Badgers. The Lancers controlled much of the match, taking the first two sets 25–19 and 29–27. Brock responded with a tight third-set win, but Windsor closed the door in the fourth, earning the victory with a 25–18 finish.

Saturday brought a marquee matchup as the Lancers welcomed the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat, who entered the weekend with an 11–1 record and ranked fourth in U SPORTS. Windsor rose to the challenge, delivering an impressive straight-sets sweep by scores of 25–21, 25–19, and 25–22.

The weekend wrapped up Sunday against the seventh-ranked Queen’s Golden Gaels, last season’s OUA champions who defeated Windsor in the conference final at the TLC. The Lancers battled closely in the opening set before falling 28–26, and Queen’s carried that momentum to a 3–0 win.

Despite the loss, head coach James Gravelle was pleased with what his team gained from the weekend.

“Getting a chance to play UBCO and Queen’s was great for us coming out of the break,” said Gravelle. “Brock is also a quality opponent and made for a great weekend of competition that allowed us all to try different lineups and work on some important things ahead of our resumption of regular season competition next weekend.”

The Lancers return to OUA action Friday when they host the York Lions for a pair of weekend matches. Windsor sits tied with Queen’s atop the OUA standings at 8–2 and will also host the U SPORTS men’s volleyball national championship tournament in March.
