MacPherson clutch as Cavs upset top seeded Comets

The Kingsville sr. boys basketball team shocked undefeated Catholic Central Tuesday night in the opening round of the playoffs with a 45-39 win. "Respect to the other team. They have some great players and we got it done." said Hayden Nurse before getting drenched by his teammates.

Trailing by one near the end of the third quarter, Nurse hit a three pointer to give the Comets their first lead of the game. "They have a really good crowd, just block everything out and get my shot."

Both teams struggled to score in the 4th with the first bucket coming with 3:42 left as Elvin Janasus-Kemp picked up a rebound for a 39-36 lead. Ian MacPherson hit two free throws followed by a Matt Mayhew layup to put the home team on their heals.

Tier 2 MVP Odilon Kougnami hit a three-pointer cutting the deficit to two but MacPherson nailed a pair of free throws to seal the deal as the 8-2 Cavs knock off the 10-0 Comets.

"It tough. The young men in that dressing room are upset," said CCH head coach Dave Walls after the game. "I've been on the winning side. I've been on the losing side and I know life goes on."

Walls said the team ended their season sharing a hug in the lockeroom before dispersing. After an 0-10 season CCH rebounded with a perfect regular season. Walls says his team will cheer on the juniors who advanced to the semi-finals Thursday. "We'll all be in the stands cheering them on because it's one big Comet family."
