No time to relax, Knights basketball on a mission

There was a moment in the 4th quarter of Tuesday night's game between Holy Names and Sandwich, with the game in hand for the Knights, that saw head coach Ryan Steer pull a player aside and intensly explain a gaffe made on the court.

It seemed like a sign this team is not messing around after falling short at OFSAA last season. "We need everyone to contribute, not just our starters," said Steer, who won an OUA championship in 2007 as a member of the Windsor Lancers. "Everybody that goes on the floor needs to be ready to play and we're building that mindset. We had a taste of it last year and we got bronze but we're hungry for gold."

Players have bought in and the team is playing with confidence after winning two tournaments which included a victory against two-time defending OFSAA champs from Oakwood. "We proved it up in Toronto when we were playing. We lost to the #1 team by four and beat them (Oakwood) this year by 15," noted guard Jordan Firr. "We know we can go get so why not go get it?"

Holy Names beat Sandwich 69-35 Tuesday to improve to 3-0 on the season. They've scored a league-leading 204 points and allowed 94 against. "It starts with our defence and our rebounding," Steer told Powerplay Sports. "We got our core group back and we're playing hard. Gained some confidence with the first tournament win. We're just gonna take it game by game and keep building. Obviously we want to be playing our best at the end of the season but right now we're playing well."
