Novak invited to main camp

NHL training camps opens Wednesday and Windsor's Jakov Novak has been invited to Montreal's main camp.

The former Assumption Purple Raiders standout was one of 27 players at the Canadiens rookie camp which began in Brossard, Quebec and ended in Buffalo for a three-day tournament this past weekend. The Habs' prospects opened the tournament with a loss to the young Sabres before finishing with wins over Boston and Ottawa during a Monday matinee.

"I thought they got better every game." said Habs' Director of Player Development Rob Ramage during Tuesday's briefing with media. "It's a start. For many of those guys it's their first time in that type of situation. Want to see how they responded to it. It's all part of the process."

The 24-year old was picked up from Ottawa by Montreal less than a week ago for future considerations. Last season Novak signed a pro contract with the ECHL's Allen Americans and scored seven goals and put up 12 points in 14 games.

Back in July, he signed with the AHL's Laval Rocket and hopes he's earned a chance to skate at Montreal's main camp starting Wednesday.

"It's a day off for them right now. That's going to be determined at some point today who's staying and who's going." Ramage said.

Jakov got word late Tuesday afternoon that he is on the invitation list and will be heading to main camp.
