Seven-year drought ends for Lancers football

It took seven years but the Windsor Lancers football team was finally able to scratch the itch and win their first road game since 2015. "That one was huge." said head coach J-P Circelli, who's team beat Guelph 28-24 Monday afternoon and improved to 1-1 on the season.

"We said if we want to be a playoff team we have to find a way to win at least one on the road."

After losing 19-16 at home against Ottawa in their season opener the Lancers didn't lose confidence heading on the road. Running back Joey Zorn gave Windsor a 20-14 lead over the nationally ranked (#9) Gryphons on a highlight 80-yard run in the third quarter.

A Frank Kemayou interception turned into a 40-yard score and a 24-21 lead for the home team in the 4th. With 6:20 left Christopher John broke five tackles to cap off a seven play, 82 yard drive to give the Lancers the lead for good.

"We expect to go into every game with a chance to be competitive and win." Said Circelli. "Even though I know we're still seen as underdogs it just meant a lot to be able to go in and get that monkey off our back from a quality opponent like Guelph."

The Lancers enter their bye week and will host the University of Toronto September 17 at 7pm. That game will feature the return former Windsor head coach Joe D'Amore who is offensive coordinator for the Varsity Blues.
