Sun County qualify for OHL Cup

The Sun County U16 team beat Huron Perth 4-2 Wednesday night to earn their spot at the OHL Cup starting Monday at the Scotiabank Pond in Toronto.

"The goal was to get to this point and ultimately, last night, we attained it." Head coach Zack Percy told Powerplay Sports.

In his first year as bench boss of the Panthers, Percy says the team was well coached prior to his taking over. "I've had some good teams in the past but what this team does on the ice, it's really special," Percy said. "The majority of them have been together since they were nine-year old."

The Panthers are a team that a local scout says may produce a winfall of picks at this year's OHL Draft like captain Jaako Wycisk who scored his 6th of the playoffs against the Lakers. Also scoring for Sun County were Alexander Lisi, Brayden Lappalainen and Eamon Edgar. Daniel Cinelli earned the win turning aside 43 shots including 27 in the third period.

According to Percy there has been a natural rivalry with Huron Perth for years and he was proud to be on the right side of this year's battle, which saw Sun County go 2-1-1 in the series against the Lakers.

"Watching these guys beat them last night was probably the highlight of my coaching career." said Percy who has been coaching for 12 years. He is a former LaSalle Vipers defenceman who also played for the Windsor Spitfires.

The Panthers are in the Subban Division and scheduled to play Upper Canada Monday at 3:30pm.
