Volleyball player scores game tying goal

Judy Alshihabi scored the game tying goal late in the second half to help Massey earn a 2-2 tie vs Herman Thursday afternoon. "I think we all did our best," said Alshihabi who joined the Mustangs soccer team for fun this spring. "I'm not much of a player. I play volleyball. I don't play soccer but I persevered. Tried my best. I'm happy I scored the goal and I'm proud of both teams."

The tie was the first point of the season for both teams who, after three games, are still in search of their first win. It was an entertaining game with much of the excitement coming in the last 20 minutes.

Trailing 1-0, Herman was awarded a penalty kick. Backstopper Fatima Rhuma dove to her left and stopped Ava Racine's shot but couldn't get her hands on the rebound. Brailynne Melniciuk crashed the net and deposited the game tying goal.

A few minutes later, Racine got her head on a Melniciuk corner kick through a crowd and into the Massey net for a 2-1 Griffin lead.

With time running out in the second half Munira Al-Khulaidy coralled a throw in and broke down the right wing. She crossed a ball that bounced by a few players before landing on the foot of a streaking Alshihabi who was johnny on the spot for the tap in.

"A tie, it's unfortunate but they deserve that also," Racine said. "It was a good game. It was a hard fought game by both sides."

Herman and Massey are tied for 5th in the Group 2 A/AA division. Riverside beat Catholic Central 8-0 to move into a first place tie with Assumption at 4-0. Lajeunesse is third with a 3-0 record. Brennan is 4th at 1-3.
