Women's hockey shines in Windsor

The Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association Wildcats won the U22 House League banner Sunday as the Windsor Wild Winter Female Hockey Tournament came to a close. The Wildcats won gold beating the Huron Heat from Clinton, Ontario 2-0 in the final.

In all, 48 teams played 102 games over the course of the weekend. The Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association is celebrating 30 years this season with this tournament seeing a big jump in attendance in the last five years.

"To see it grow from when I took over with almost 28 teams to now 48, so almost doubling what we were at, it feels great," said tournament director Katie Doe. "Our girls are excited. They're coming from everywhere now. Teams returning year after year. We're really filling up the city with female hockey."

Doe is thankful for the tournament's success, especially with another big girls hockey tournament taking place in Sarnia.

"They run a very organized tournament," said Francine Stadler whose daughter is part of the Wildcats U22 team. "More and more teams coming from the States, from all over Ontario and it's because of the work they've put into making it what it is. It's a special type tournament."

Here's video of Lily Bojrab scoring the winning goal late against the Huron Heat in the U13 division Sunday. Bojrab added another goal in the last minute of the game to help her Indiana Jr. Fuel team win 3-1.
