Big finishes for local athletes at OFSAA

The Windsor-Essex area had an outstanding showing at the OFSAA Track & Field Championships. Here are some of the results:

Team Relays
Sandwich Girls 4 x 400m — Silver
Villanova Girls 4 x 400m — Bronze
Holy Names Girls 4 x 400m — 4th Place

Individual Medals
Anieu Chan (Massey) - Won Sr. Girls 400m for a third straight year. She edged out Mariah Williams from Father Henry Carr by a tenth of a second in a time of 55.63 seconds to capture gold.
Julia Carswell (Sandwich) - Took bronze in the Jr. Girls 400m with a time of 57.19 seconds. She also took bronze in the Junior Girls 800m and Silver with the Girls 4 x 400m Relay team.
Annie Seagris (Sandwich) - Won gold in the Sr. Girls Javelin with a throw of 42.09m.
Colin Diotte (Sandwich) - Won silver in the Senior Boys Javelin event with a throw of 55.53m.
Nicklas Gagne (Maranatha Christian Academy) - Was a double gold winner winning the Novice Boys 800m and Novice Boys 1500m.
Tyler Goetz (Essex) - Silver, Junior Men's Shot Put; Silver, Junior Men's Javelin
Gabrielle Brun (Villanova) - won gold in Novice Girls pole vault.
Madison Gravelle (St. Joe's) - won bronze in the 100m hurdles.
Anthony Cigan (St. Joe's) - Broke OFSAA record of 2:15.52 in the 800m Intellectual Imp. set by Cory McCaugherty in 2022, the same year Cigan placed 9th in his first year. He has won four straight in the Para 800m since including this year's record time of 2:14.52.

Gianfranco Rauti (Villanova) - A year after winning OFSAA gold in the Novice 3000m, Rauti moved up to Jr. and crossed the finish line first again. Alistar Wark of Collingwood was fast off the blocks and opened up a 60m gap on the field. Rauti made his move with just over a lap to go, passing Wark and finishing strong winning by over a second. He also won bronze in the 1500m.

Mattew Murga Catholic Central - In his first season as a shot put thrower, Matthew Murga of Catholic Central won the Men Shot Put Intellectually Imp event with a throw of 11.21m which broke the Canadian Interscholastic Record. The event was an open field with the 15-year old being one of the younger competitors. "He's really devoted to getting in the weight room. That weight room passion translated to his success as a shot putter." said CCH coach Jalil Khoury. "He likes competing and he wants to do really well and it all came together for him."
The grade 10 thrower also broke the broke the WECSSAA and SWOSSA records earlier this season.
And finally, a shout out to Sandwich head coach Rob Moore who led the Sabres one last time. He has been the rock of the program as a volunteer for 32 years dedicating his free time in many ways to ensure a successful track and field experience for every athlete. Congrats on a great career Rob!!
