Saints softball repeats as national champs

The St. Clair softball team went 5-0 this weekend to repeat as Canadian Collegiate Softball Association national champs. "Our team feeling was very gratifying as the expectations are set high at tryouts each season." said head coach Doug Wiseman.

The Saints mercied Durham 9-2 in the final Sunday afternoon. Grace Hearns opened the game with a triple for the Lords and was brought home by Jacelyn Shelton. St. Clair responded in their half of the first as Shae-Lyn Murphy led off going yard to tie it. Bryanna Kressler then followed that up with a three-run dinger. Sierra Baltzer cracked a 3-run shot in the second as the Saints built a 7-1 lead. Amy Claydon hit a 2-run shot in the 4th to close out the scoring. Kressler gave up two runs on three hits and struck out five leading the Saints to their second consecutive title.

The win over Durham comes a week after The Lords swept St. Clair in a doubleheader ending a 43-game unbeaten steak. "We have much respect for the OCAA conference as both Durham and Humber medalled as well this weekend." Wiseman said. "Our energy might have been at its all -time high throughout the tournament. Each game we played with focus from the first pitch to the last out of every game."

The Saints travelled home Thanksgiving Day and will take a few days off before returning to practice Thursday. St. Clair hosts a pair of doubleheaders next weekend with Humber visiting the Sports Park Saturday and Sheridan closing out the regular season Sunday.
