St. Clair College hosted a landmark esports event Saturday, bringing together players from roughly 20 high schools in what organizers are calling a stepping stone toward provincial recognition.

The event, organized by St. Clair's esports program, gave high school competitors a taste of playing for something while making a broader argument, that esports belongs alongside traditional high school sports.
Esports director Shaun Byrne, who helped build the program at St. Clair, says the goal is clear. "It's been a really good proof of concept event for us and we're excited to see where it goes," Byrne told Powerplay Sports.
For the students involved, Saturday was more than a gaming session. It was a championship.
